Everyone Needs a Drummer

Reports this week that the number of formerly drummer-laden bands now drummerless in the town of Mo has reached three. Maximum Headlessness have been on the prowl for a drummer for some time (I think theirs moved or went into the military), Bowling League have been sans drummer since the departure of workaholic Kevin Post, and Descension Rate robo-drummer Vicious is moving to Tennessee to start a new job. Drummers often end up doing double duty but I suggest flyering to find some unmined drummers in the rough.

As for the D-Rate, they will soldier on with a completely robotic drum machine but are reportedly on the lookout for a human drummer who uses normal drums and a keyboardist. In the meantime they have two more shows with their current lineup, one multigenre show here with rockers American Sound Syndicate, hip hop heavyweight Meuwl and out of towners Devola from NYC, who apparently sound like every genre form the second half of the 20th century, and are female-fronted as well, keeping the bill 50/50 on singer vocalist ratio. The show is Friday week, one week after this Friday's Moon / Stonewall Jackson 5ive / Cobra rockfest.

Almost forgot to mention though that Descension Rate got on the bill of a major industrial show in Pittsburgh. They'll be opening for Slick Idiot, which is some of the fellows who used to be in KMFDM (#1 in Descension Rate's list of influences). Also on the bill are Pittsburgh's industrial flagbearers Rein[Forced] and a couple other bands I'm not familiar with. If you want some details, check out Descension Rate's Myspace page. Kudos to them for landing a spot opening for some bigtime folks in another city entirely.

Lastly I spoke for a while to Arms over Arteries drummer Chris Quattro when I ran into him at the Den the other day. I didn't catch their show at the Corner Cafe but they've apparently been touring a great deal and not playing much locally. I hadn't seen their name about for a long time until the show's flyers began surfacing, but they're still going strong.

Oh and very very lastly, I noticed via our barely-used forums that local one-man recording unit Shoe has finished an entire album which he describes as indie pop (not, I noted, indiepop) and is giving it away completely free to download here. Go out and get some free new music, and use the forum dammit. Thank you and goodnight.

I want to make a comment but I don't know where to start or even if my thoughts count anymore.... it's not always that easy to start a band or even keep a band going. I just hope that those people who are in bands that are running smoothly or at least have members who are all on the same page realize how lucky they are to be in that position.

I'd also kinda like to implore anyone who is thinking about joining a band to look deep inside yourself and decide what you want out of it, and find out what is expected of you in the band. Don't join 8 bands if you're not going to be able to commit to them in a manner sufficient to their goals and dreams. Being in a band is fun, but it's also hardwork, and that means dragging your ass to rehearsals when they are supposed to occur and making an effort to pull your weight. If you're going to be in more than one band it's going to multiply the amount of work you've got to do and subtract from your true free time. This means sacrifice of other things.

On a similar note, if someone says they'll play with you and you know they're in several other bands be reluctant to get too excited until you know that they can actually fulfill your needs. And you're gonna have to just get used to the idea that you're not the top priority and eventually they'll quit or you won't be able to play as many shows cause they'll be engaged at other venues or on tour with their other bands.

I personally am a selfish bastard who doesn't like to share musicians and I get a little irritated when band mates form other bands, that take precedent over mine.... this is why I'll probably be playing by myself at open mics for the rest of my life.
Good luck to everyone out there in search of kindred musical spirits to live the dream with. Hopefully I can muster the energy to give it another shot in a few weeks when I'm free of school responsibilities

can we post bulletins on other people's forums asking for more drummers to move to town?

Surely we've got the connections to guarantee a job and a place to stay for any starving drummers out there in need of a place lay their beat...

I mean developing cities offer incentives to get new businesses and even offer rent incentives to get folks to move into their new developments. Couldn't we all organize something like a Drummers Hostel, where we'll recruit new folks to play drums? All we need is like on old building with cots and stuff and a drum set..it could be like a factory for beats. They'll sleep there and practice and then we'll "pimp" them out to whoever needs them. I'll let them use my drumset to practice and learn on...

    This could be awesome

another option could be to just acquire a drumset from somewhere and recruit one of those kids who is always asking you to but him beer or cigs to learn and play the drums in exchange for said beer and cigs... or you could also get a homeless person to play for you... that would be REALLY awesome

These are all awesome ideas, and if you guys down join in on the vision I'm going to do them on my own without you so you might as well get in on the ground floor...

Lets be drummer pimps and exploit people for the sake of our own rythmic needs

My drummer stinks. Especially after a few days without a change of socks.

I think the problem is that most bands around here are boring or the people in the bands aren't very creative. As a drummer myself, it ain't fun playing the same beat over and over while the singer jacks himself off on the girls in the front row. Nobody is doing anything worth having a drummer for. IMO
