Weekday Family Fun

We've added a new blogger to our ranks, Patrick Dolan also writes for the DA and he'll be writing for us as well now, hell yeah. Legitimate journalists! That's right, we're not all scofflaws.

I wanted to take some time out to mention two weekday shows about to happen. Tonight is the Andy Pickens festival at 123 Pleasant Street. If you're unfamiliar with the work of Mr. Pickens, he's a local filmmaker whose work is often show by the Outlet, WVU's film club. There will be a screening of his films at 9pm, and 8bitz, Krueger's Circle Jerk and Rob Wehrle & Kevin Post from the Emergency will all be playing following that. I don't know if Rob & Kevin are playing Emergency songs or what, but if it's anything like Rob's few acoustic appearances you should really try and go. Krueger's Circle Jerk features Ryan Postlewaite from Descension Rate but there approach is much more comical than the old D-Rate. You can listen to them on their Myspace page. In fact they really don't sound much alike at all, but if you need to get your Ryan fix, then this is the time, as following last weekend's performance at Mayday!, Descension Rate are taking a break for a couple of months to write new material and present papers across the country on scientific concepts related to toxicology. No, I'm not making any of that up. Also at the show they should be selling DVDs of Pickens' work complete with bonuses like commentary tracks. How slick is that? Doors open at 7pm.

Secondly, tomorrow night there's another cool mixed-format show at 123. Local songmeister Mikey Iafrate will be opening up for folk singer Holley Anderson and a talk by Sander Hicks. All in all it sounds like a lovely evening of left-leaning carousing and libation. Hicks is oft compared to Henry Rollins and most likely will be covering issues related to his new book on 9/11, The Big Wedding. Holley's name can barely be separated from the adjective radical in some form, and her bio namechecks the folk powerhouses of Dylan and Difranco. So, if this Alito's-going-to-overturn-Roe v. Wade business has got you down, come down to 123 for a good pickmeup. Morgantown's stalwarts of punk rawk Law Biting Citizens will finish out the night. The show starts at 9pm, and the tide appears to have turned in the early vs. late show debate, so make sure you get there on time or you'll miss some stuff.
